In a battery, parallel is the number of batteries connected in series. For example, if you have two 12 volt batteries and you connect them in parallel, you will have 24 volts. The capacity of the battery remains the same but you have more power available.

In the case of a DC/AC inverter, it would be possible to connect more than one battery in parallel by using a special device called an isolation diode (see figure above). This is done so that there is no voltage drop when charging or discharging each of the batteries independently.
